Geo3D is freeware. Currently English, French and German versions of Geo3D are available.
Geo3D lets you navigate through space rather than only manipulate the models. Geo3D relies on QuickDraw 3D (QD3D) for rendering, navigation and picking.
What’s new? (see http://www.topoi.ch/news.html)
New navigation concept:
• Mode "Fly" replaces the former mode "Walk"
• Mode "Axes" added (camera translation along world coordinate axes)
• The more flexible mode modification "Stabilize Horizon" replaces the former "Remain Upright" (QD3D 1.6 required)
• Mode modification "Walk" added. It's designed to walk on terrain models.
New features and improvements:
• New "Look Back" command for cameras
• Viewpoints and "Initial Camera" now depend on mode modifications (stabilize horizon, walk)
• Improved "Horizontalize" command (QD3D 1.6 is required for best results)
• "Initial Camera" will be updated while saving the document
• "File/Insert..." command now doesn't change the camera
• Added "Field Of View" sliders for both general use and walk mode modification
• Now you can also set the "Back Front Clipping Plane Ratio" by sliders for both general use and walk mode modification
• Redesigned command palettes
• Improved "Camera Info" palette
• Updated "Help" window
• Added support for proxy icon drag and window path popup (Mac OS 8.5 or newer required)
• Improved placement of palettes and color picker
• Improved memory management for offscreen picture export
• The anchor is now visible when doing distance picking
• Faster rendering when linear fog is on
• Enlarged numerical range for speed settings
• Many internal optimisations
Fixed bugs
• Fixed bug which could cause a fatal error when opening very large animation files
• Fixed bug which could cause a fatal error when saving to a removed file
• Fixed crashing bug using the command "Close All" when side windows are open
• Fixed an issue with "Default Window Size: Large"
• Fixed a few cosmetic bugs
The minimal configuration to use Geo3D is:
• A PowerPC based Computer (PowerMac) with at least 32 megabytes of memory (RAM).
• Mac OS 8 or newer (or Mac OS 7.5.1 - 7.6.1 with Appearance Extension 1.0.3 or newer)
• The system extension QuickDraw™ 3D, the libraries QuickDraw™ 3D IR, QD3DCustomElements, and QuickDraw™ 3D RAVE version 1.5.4 or newer must be installed in your Extensions folder.
Required for some features are:
• Internet Config extension version 2.0 or newer (for Mac OS 8.1 and earlier only)
• QD3D 1.6
Geo3D, QD3D 1.6, Internet Config, and Appearance Extension are available from
<http://www.topoi.ch/download.html>.
Geo3D performs best when run on a monitor set to thousands or millions of colors. In order to view transparent surfaces you must have either a hardware QuickDraw 3D accelerator or a plug-in renderer which supports transparencies.
Geo3D supports QD3D’s 3D metafile (3DMF) format. 3DMF is a cross-platform (Mac, Windows, Unix) file format that can contain any 3D information the user can create, including all types of geometries and objects, plus textures, lights, shaders, cameras, active renderers, material properties, hierarchical information and more. Both text and binary formats are supported.
Geo3D will open a prefences file in the same folder as itself before looking in the Preferences folder for one. Deleting this file has no effect other than restoring factory defaults.
